The banks must pay back billions

DnB NOR’s sale of two loan-financed structured savings products was contra to sound business practice, according to a statement issued today by the Norwegian Bankklagenemnda. This means that the bank must pay customers back everything it has earned on the loans – charges, interest and commission. The loan agreements will also be null and void.

Cleaning up the digital rights chaos

Increasingly more consumers are purchasing digital products such as music and films on CDs, DVDs and in the form of legally downloaded files. As digital consumers, you are not protected by any legislation and it is therefore impossible to know what is legitimate and when the law has been broken. As a link in the campaign against the chaos related to digital rights, the Norwegian Consumer Council is today introducing your digital rights.

The Norwegian Consumer Council has launched a charter of eight mandatory consumer rights for digital products and services consumers have legal access to and are dependant upon. When implemented in the relevant legislation, it will represent an important step towards a balanced and well-functioning information society.

iTunes’ questionable terms and conditions

If you buy music from iTunes, iTunes can without further ado change your rights to the music you have already bought. This is one of the reasons that the Consumer Council of Norway is now lodging a complaint against iTunes with the Consumer Ombudsman for breach of the Marketing Control Act.

Planning the future of Consumer Education

What are the strategic options we have nationally and internationally in promoting consumer education? How may we, with small resources, get results? How may international cooperation give help and direction to national tasks? What are the keys in an upstream or downstream strategy? In this article, we will discuss the different strategic options for developing and implementing consumer education on the basis of established priorities under the Nordic Council of Ministers. We will also try to give comments on how EU implements Article 153 in the Amsterdam treaty in this respect.

Consumer knowledge in Norwegian Upper Secondary Schools

A course in economics and information processing was introduced in 1994 as a new cumpolsory subject in the general studies program of Norwegian Upper Secondary schools, 1st grade.

Any remedy allowed in new examination structure. "Open book"-exams.

The modern 16-year olds solve the examination questions as they would have solved problems in their everyday life. This arrangement is received with enthusiasm both by teachers and pupils, according to a survey made in 1997. Besides, the pupils get used to the working methods of general business condition as they use IT as a tool, as the examination must be delivered as print-outs.
